Horse Families

Cupid & Arrow

Cupid and Arrow are a mare and foal with a story that will go straight to the heart of any horse lover! Cupid, the demure bay Pinto dam of Arrow, is an intelligent and sensitive horse that had endured a hard-knock life until 1999. At auction that year, her petite frame thin and weak and with her luck nearly run out, a New England farmer named Buck Kalinowksi saw her. What would catch someone's eye on this unpromising animal? It was the perfect heart-shaped marking on her forehead, which Buck remarked on to himself after almost incidentally sweeping aside her lank forelock to better judge her. After paying $325 for her, Buck loaded up the mare and headed back home to his farm. Now-named Cupid, the mare warmed up to her new owners and soon after was the barn’s favored riding pony. That winter, however, Cupid revealed a little secret she'd been keeping. Unnoticed one winter's night, Cupid quietly lay down in her stall and foaled a colt. And as if fate had planned it, the little black Pinto foal had a most unusual marking over his hindquarters: a marking unmistakably shaped like a white arrow, pointed over his spine. The colt and his unique marking was a fitting complement to the serendipity, compassion, and love that gave Cupid her second chance at life at Hillside Equestrian Meadows.

Pony Family Set

Ponies! Whether running wild or performing under saddle, these pint-sized equines are easy to love.

Though they come in different breeds and colors, ponies always measure under 14.2 hands (58 inches) tall.

This stallion is the father of his family, a proud and spirited animal whose color is called “dun” (golden tan). Horses and ponies this color also have “primitive” markings like stripes down their backs, and, sometimes, markings like a zebra’s stripes on their shoulders or legs.

While the stallion stands watch over his family, the mare, or mother, often nurses her baby, or foal. Like horses, ponies recognize each other through their sense of smell, and talk to each other through taste and touch. Body language is important; a flick of the ear or a roll of the eye can signal alarm.

Ponies like to be around other ponies, and they make friends by grooming each other. A mare’s relationship to her foal is especially strong. She will protect him and teach him how to survive, both in the wild and around humans. This mare is a “grulla pinto.” That means she’s spotted with white and a smoky shade of dun, or grulla. Like duns, horses and ponies with grullo or grulla coloration may also have primitive markings.

Her foal is a dun pinto, with traits from both parents. Foals stand and nurse soon after birth. Then they’re ready to run with the herd!

Ponies are hardy, and often grow thick winter coats to protect them from the cold. Trusty, surefooted and clever, they make wonderful teachers for children when trained for riding or driving. And, despite their small size, ponies can do everything a horse can – and then some! No wonder they’re the darlings of the horse world.

Miniature Horse Set

They might be small in stature, but there’s a lot to love about minis! Just ask Lisa Davis of Missouri™s LTD Quarter and Miniature Horses, the American Miniature Horse Registry™s 2004 Breeder of the Year. Though she started out showing palomino Quarter Horses, Davis soon downsized her operation to include equines under 34" tall.

But not just any minis would do! Davis decided to specialize in the loud frame overo pintos that were virtually unknown among miniature horses. And it wasn't long before mini fans stood up and took notice.

The models in Breyer Animal Creations Miniature Horse Set represent the choicest LTD stock. A 1995 stallion, LTD's Red Cloud is a dazzling red dun with the rare Medicine Hat frame overo pattern. No wonder he's the winningest multi-colored stallion in miniature horse history! For four consecutive years, he was also the Pinto Horse Association of America's Miniature Horse of the Year for overo color. In addition, he's secured numerous national championships and sired several more multiple champions at the national level. Now one of Davis' senior sires, LTD's Red Cloud has come a long way from the sickly foal who was raised in her basement and cavorted with the family dogs!

Then there's Magic Man's Grand Slam, a black roan Medicine Hat overo stallion who is the spitting image of his retired sire, LTD's Magic Man. Not only was he 2004 AMHR Miniature Performance Horse of the Year, he is a 13-time national champion in Halter/Performance/Color. A whiz at pleasure driving, Magic Man's Grand Slam has also won national tricolors in Open Hunter and Amateur Versatility. In short (no pun intended), he can do everything the “big guys can do. And then some!
No doubt about it: LTD minis are horses of a different color AND a different size!

Cloud's Legacy

Proud and free, the wild horses of Montana's Arrowhead range lead an exhilarating existence, but many dangers threaten their safety and well-being. From lightening strikes in the high mountain ranges to the brutal Northern Rockies winter, even the environment can be deadly for these creatures. In addition to threats from rivals, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regularly rounds up family bands in an unceasing effort to manage the wild horse population. First introduced in the groundbreaking documentary Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies, Emmy-award winning filmmaker Ginger Kathrens continues the story of Cloud in Cloud's Legacy. Though most stallions are at least six before they even attempt to challenge established band leaders for mares, Cloud became a band stallion at age five when he acquired Sitka, a pregnant blue roan mare, and her yearling daughter. Sitka later gave birth to Cloud's stepson Flint, a light grullo colt. But Cloud also has a full son that is born into another band. When another stallion became injured, Cloud stole one of his mares. Not strong enough to hold the mare, Cloud lost her to another stallion. But Cloud's son, almost a carbon copy of his father, is unmistakable. Originally named Little Cloud, Bolder earned his new name as his independent personality evolved. "Cloud is the most compelling and charismatic wild animal I've had the opportunity to film," says Ms. Kathrens. "But, covering his life on film has been a nerve wracking experience. I'm always relieved to get back up on the mountain and find he has survived another season." Kathrens has spent much of the past seven years observing these extraordinary animals. After witnessing Cloud's birth in 1995, she returned with her cameras to capture his life on film, compiling an unprecedented visual history of the growth and emergence of a natural leader among wild horses.
